West Virginia Legislature Concludes Legislative Session

On March 15, legislators in West Virginia concluded their consideration of non-budget legislation. On March 18, after meeting in an extended, budget-only session, the Legislature approved House Bill 2016, the 2015-16 state budget, and adjourned its 2015 regular legislative session. 

Approved education legislation includes: House Bill 2005, which modifies the alternative teacher certification program; House Bill 2377, permitting the state Board of Education to approve alternatives to school instructional time requirements; House Bill 2478, which revises the school funding formula; Senate Bill 19, establishing instructional time requirements for prekindergarten programs; and Senate Bill 529, which makes changes to the state’s retirement systems, including the State Teachers’ Retirement System.
