Benchmarks 2000

Student Achievement in SREB States

By Joseph D. Creech

While SREB states are meeting or exceeding national averages on some measures of student achievement, there still is much to do. This report, the fifth in the Educational Benchmarks 2000 Series, examines the progress that SREB states have made. It also looks at the major challenges that remain: defining what students should know and setting standards for how well they need to read, write, compute and solve problems; measuring student achievement as part of a state accountability system; and finding effective ways to help all students meet high expectations
