Quality Teachers: Can Incentive Policies Make a Difference?

Can state leaders ensure that every child in every classroom - regardless of location, grade level or subject area - has a well-prepared, quality teacher? Chances are the answer to this question right now is “no.” Understanding your state's needs and problems is the first step in addressing teacher shortages. Incentive programs are not a new idea in SREB states, and states that are implementing programs can learn much from pay-for-performance programs of the past.
