From Virginia: Taking Stock and Pushing Forward, 2014

Student Outcomes

• Virginia’s fourth- and eighth-graders outperformed the nation in reading and math achievement on NAEP at the Basic and Proficient levels. Fourth-graders outpaced the nation in math at the Basic and Proficient levels and in reading at the Proficient level. Eighth-graders outpaced the nation in math at the Proficient level.
• Virginia’s high school graduation rate increased, and now it exceeds the national rate. The increase in graduation rate extended to black, Hispanic and white high school seniors.
• Virginia’s average composite SAT score increased, topping the national score. Virginia was the only SREB state that exceeded the nation in average college admission test score.
•Virginia’s college enrollment rate for recent high school graduates exceeded the nation and region.

Policy Highlights

• Virginia assesses high school juniors on college and career readiness and offers readiness courses in literacy/English and math for juniors or seniors not ready for college and careers.
• Virginia provides need-based financial aid for postsecondary education statewide.
• Virginia provides for guarantee of full transfer of general education credits and full transfer of associate degree credits.
