SREB Tools to Help States Adopt a College and Career Readiness Agenda

SREB's Model Agenda for College and Career Readiness

SREB’s Model Agenda focuses state K-12 and higher education efforts on the same set of college- and career-readiness standards and related student assessments. Using this model as a framework, states can evaluate college- and career-readiness policies and develop and implement college- and career-readiness action agendas.

Specifically, SREBs model agenda calls for each state to take these five actions:
  1. Develop statewide college- and career-readiness standards in reading, writing and math that are created jointly by public pre-K-12 and higher education sectors.
  2. Make college- and career-readiness standards key components of state high school assessments and statewide higher education placement/readiness assessments.
  3. Make school and student performance on the readiness assessments part of the state school accountability program.
  4. Adjust or develop curriculum and instruction to target the specific statewide readiness standards.
  5. Develop statewide plans for targeted professional development to help teachers understand the specific readiness standards and how to teach them effectively.

State Evaluation Questions for College and Career Readiness

State leaders can use the questions in the link below to evaluate their state’s progress toward a complete college- and career-readiness initiative. Educational leaders can then work to fill in any gaps and complete the five steps in the Model Agenda. For examples of state evaluations, see SREB’s evaluation reports for Texas, Virginia, Kentucky and Maryland.
