Why is Technology Access for Students with Disabilities Important?

By Dianne Griffin

The Southern Regional Education Board and the federal No Child Left Behind legislation recognize technology's role in helping students meet higher goals for academic performance. States need to make sure that all students - including those with disabilities - have access to and can use technology. What barriers prevent students with disabilities from using information technology? How can Web resources and other learning resources be made accessible? How are SREB states addressing this issue? This report provides valuable information about laws, standards and organizations that help educators improve access to information technology for students with disabilities.

Keywords: assistive technology, disability, Section 508, accessibility

(04T01); 8 pages; 2004; $1.50

Goals that it reflects: Every school has higher student performance and meets state academic standards for all students each year.
