Course Overview
This is an online course on curricula, student and program assessment. It includes a discussion of
curriculum and evaluation models in both academic nursing education and professional nursing staff development.
Course Objectives
Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to
- analyze societal and health care trends that impact the nursing curricula;
- apply principles of curriculum design to nursing education curricula and professional development curricula;
- analyze strategies for assessing the learning environment for nursing education and professional staff development curricula;
- apply strategies for assessing and evaluating the learner in nurse education programs and professional staff development;
- identify strategies for dealing with diversity in nursing education and staff development programs;
- incorporate standards of professional performance into nursing educational program planning;
- analyze fiscal factors associated with planning and delivering nursing education and staff development programs; and
- apply evaluation criteria to nursing education and staff development courses and programs.

Description
This is an online course with a teaching practicum focusing on teaching
and learning strategies in nursing education. Classroom, technology-based and
clinical teaching strategies are included. The course practicum objectives are
tailored to the students' career path in either academic nursing education or
professional nursing staff development.
Objectives
- At the end of the course, the student will be able to:
- Apply learning theories to the planning an dimplementing of learning
activities in nursing education and professional staff development programs
- Apply knowledge of learning styles to the planning and implementation of
teaching/learning activities in nursing education and professional staff
development programs
- Practice selected instructional strategies in:
- The nursing classroom
- In online nursing education offerings
- The clinical nursing education practicum

Teaching and Learning Methods
Teaching learning activities include an online journal to document practicum
experiences, online discussion in each module, online demonstration of selected
microteaching strategies, and online quizzes. PLEASE NOTE: This course
requires a teaching practicum. Teaching practicum objectives will be negotiated
between the student and the professor.
