| What is EvaluTech?
For the first time, schools across the SREB
region have easy access to instructional materials recommended by state
departments of education. EvaluTech is a searchable electronic
collection of reviews of instructional materials, including computer
software, CD-ROMs, videos and books, provided on a special Web site.
Who reviews these resources?
Media specialists, teachers and other education
professionals provide the evaluations. Reviewers are trained and use
criteria developed by the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction
(NCDPI). The evaluation criteria are published on the Web site.
What subject areas are covered? What
grade levels?
Teaching materials appropriate for grades pre-K
through 12 are reviewed in arts education, English language arts,
character education, computer science, fiction, guidance, healthful
living, information skills, mathematics, science, second languages, social
studies, traditional literature and vocational education.
How can I find out whether a certain
resource has been reviewed?
You may search the database using key words,
author, title, subject, publisher, grade level, format and review date. If
you do not find the resource you are looking for, e-mail evalutech@sreb.org
with as much information on the item as possible.
How do these reviews differ from
reviews in other publications and on other Web sites?
EvaluTech includes only recommended
instructional materials, and, unlike most other review sources, EvaluTech
connects recommended material to academic subjects and grade-level use.
EvaluTech also helps educators find materials that suit a variety of
student learning styles and teacher methods.
How are the SREB states involved with
EvaluTech?
The education departments send information about EvaluTech
to individual schools, determine what types of reviews are needed and use EvaluTech
reviews to find materials that match state student academic standards.
Im from another SREB state. Why do
I want to use a North Carolina database?
Though the reviews are written at the North
Carolina Department of Public Instruction, they fit state curricula
nationwide. And with access through searches by key word, author, title,
subject, publisher, grade level, format and review date, the database is
simple to use!
What is the cost?
EvaluTech is free to all educators in
states that participate in the SREB Educational Technology Cooperative.
Educators can also contact their state EvaluTech contact person to suggest
titles of instructional materials for evaluation.
How do I contact EvaluTech?
To reach the EvaluTech staff, send e-mail
to evalutech@sreb.org. The name and address of each state department of
education contact also are listed on the EvaluTech Web site at www.evalutech.sreb.org.
Who provides EvaluTech?
EvaluTech is available through the joint
efforts of the Southern Regional Education Boards Educational
Technology Cooperative and the North Carolina Department of Public
Instruction (NCDPI) in collaboration with the departments of education of
Alabama, Arkansas, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana,
Maryland, Mississippi, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas,
Virginia and West Virginia.
