Impact of Completing the Recommended Science Curriculum on Student Achievement
Indicators Meeting the Goal
3 lab science courses 75 out of 100
3 lab science courses at least 80 out and a concentration of 100
4 lab science courses 86 out of 100
Notes:
- What can school leaders and science teachers do to enroll most career-oriented students in at least three lab-science courses, with two courses equal to college-preparatory lab science?
- Having students to complete three years of lab science, including at least two college-preparatory-level courses, will result in 75 out of 100 students meeting the HSTW science goal.
- The chance goes to at least 80 out of 100 if students also take a concentration in agriculture, communication, electronics, community protection, or drafting and design. For example, a concentration in electronics and three years of recommended science will result in 97 out of 100 students meeting the science goal. In agriculture, it will result in 83 out of 100 meeting the goal. In other words, a combination of three science credits at the college-prep level and a concentration in one of these five career areas substantially increases a student’s chances of meeting the achievement goal.
- You can raise the number to 86 out of 100 if students take four years of science, including college-prep physical science, biology, chemistry and either physics or Applied Physics.
