The 1998 High Schools That Work Assessment: Appalachian
Regional Commission (ARC) Sites Are Improving
By Gene Bottoms and Tom Feagin
The 1998 High Schools
That Work (HSTW) Assessment report contains good news for HSTW sites
in the Appalachian Regional Commission (ARC) area and provides information
on specific school and classroom practices that need improvement. The
report shows that school, district and state efforts to use the HSTW
school-improvement framework are paying dividends. More career-bound
students are meeting the reading, mathematics and science performance
goals and completing the HSTW-recommended academic core. The results are
based on 196 schools in nine ARC states: Alabama, Georgia, Kentucky, North
Carolina, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia and West
Virginia.
