Guidance and Advisement: Influences on Students' Motivation and
Course-taking Choices

This research brief summarizes results found in a larger study, Influence
of School Practices on Students' Academic Choices by Pamela Frome of RTI and
Catherine Dunham of SREB. The study examines two components of guidance and
advisement in the middle grades and in high school: 1) communication of high
expectations through goal-setting and planning; and 2) encouragement from school
staff to do well in school.
