Growing Proportion of Children in Poverty Means More Education Challenges

New data show that a larger percentage of children in SREB states continue to live in poverty than in other regions of the country: 26 percent in 2010. That’s 7.1 million children and 44 percent of all children in poverty in the nation. The increase in children living in poverty in SREB states from 2005 to 2010 totaled 1.1 million — nearly equaling the entire increase in the rest of the country.
