Focus on Quality: Prekindergarten Programs in SREB States

by David Denton

January 2002

This report is a follow-up to the 2001 SREB report Improving Children’s Readiness for School: Preschool Programs Make a Difference, But Quality Counts! This report looks at state-funded preschool programs in 14 SREB states to determine whether they meet standards recommended by experts in early childhood in three key quality areas: child-to-staff ratios, maximum class sizes and minimum qualifications for preschool teachers. The SREB preschool programs meet or come very close to the recommended standards in almost all cases.
