Focus on Volunteer Reading Tutors
by David R. Denton
August 2000
This report looks at research on the effectiveness of volunteer tutors in
helping students who are having trouble learning to read. It concludes that
volunteer tutors can be quite helpful to students who are slightly behind in
reading but that students who have severe problems require the assistance of
highly skilled professional teachers. Under any circumstances, volunteer tutors
require appropriate training and close supervision to be effective.
