SREB Launches Insights Interactive Data
Online Tool Benchmarks Trends, Policies and Actions to Meet State Standards
The Southern Regional Education Board announced today the release of SREB Insights, an interactive data tool to help policymakers compare and understand state trends, policies and recommended actions for reaching college- and career-readiness standards.
SREB Insights features analysis around the alignment of state standards to college admission requirements, benchmarking of professional learning opportunities to help schools implement state standards and educator evaluation systems designed to help teachers get feedback on instruction so they can continuously improve their practice.
“Data can paint a picture of state trends in numbers, and SREB Insights makes that story more accessible to policymakers and education leaders,” said Joan Lord, SREB vice president of education data, policy research and programs. “We’re pleased to provide a new way to compare indicators of progress among states, quickly identify strengths and delve deeply into state profiles to understand standards and best practices.”
The goal: a user-friendly way for state policymakers, thought leaders and education leaders to navigate complex education topics and better inform their decisions and practice.
Users can now review findings from three areas. Additional reports will be brought online in the coming months.
High School to College and Careers: Tracks how state policies align with standards, assessments and college readiness to promote smooth transitions for students after high school.
This report shows how states have made strides aligning high school graduation requirements with college admission requirements. Every SREB state now incorporates college and career measures into its state accountability system and its college and career planning activities. Additionally, most states offer students multiple diploma paths to high school graduation.
Professional Learning: Benchmarks how state departments of education foster high-quality professional learning for educators on K-12 college- and career-readiness standards. Reports detail how each state promotes high-quality professional learning by (1) establishing clear expectations; (2) providing guidance, technical assistance and other supports; (3) offering professional learning opportunities to help educators understand state standards; and (4) using data and accountability for continuous improvement.
Researchers documented that, as of the 2015-16 year, all SREB states reached “essential” or “strong” levels of using data and accountability for continuous improvement. Eight states are strong in providing guidance and tools, and six are strong in establishing clear expectations.
Educator Effectiveness: Details how states support and monitor the implementation of district evaluation and feedback systems, including requirements for observation conferences.
The SREB Insights tool shows that states are in various stages of implementation—from piloting to using new standards for three years or more. It also lays out actions for states to strengthen evaluation and feedback by guiding and monitoring district-level designs.
