The Request

During October 2016, a staff member at one of the Georgia Regional Education Service Agencies contacted the educator effectiveness team to request information about teacher preparation policies for math in SREB states.

Our Response

Our team created a briefing that summarizes math content requirements for teacher candidates pursuing early childhood, elementary and middle grades certification in each of SREB’s 16 states.

While reviewing states’ administrative rules, our team discovered that state policies typically address math preparedness in one of four ways.

  1. math content standards
  2. degree concentrations in mathematics
  3. minimum credit hour requirements
  4. through the adoption of a national organization’s standards for elementary-level practice
