Tiffany K. Harrison Named Director of SREB Doctoral Scholars Program

Tiffany K. Harrison, Ph.D., has been named director of the Southern Regional Education Board’s State Doctoral Scholars Program. She was promoted to the role after working with the Doctoral Scholars Program under the leadership of founding director, Ansley A. Abraham, who retired July 1.

Oklahoma Leader Rhonda Baker Honored for Service to Education

Rhonda Baker, director of education programs for the Greater Oklahoma City Chamber and former Oklahoma state representative, was honored with the Southern Regional Education Board’s 2025 Jack Hill Champion of Education Award. She received the award at the SREB Annual Meeting in Atlanta June 21.

Ansley A. Abraham, Ph.D., founding director of the SREB-State Doctoral Scholars Program, has announced his retirement from the Southern Regional Education Board on July 1 after a 40-year career with the organization.

Gov. Tate Reeves of Mississippi was elected chair of the Southern Regional Education Board at the annual meeting of the board June 22 in Atlanta.

As SREB chair, Reeves now leads the collaborative work of governors, legislators and state education leaders on SREB’s 80-member board to improve public education at every level, from early childhood through doctoral education and the workforce.

Dale Winkler Appointed Interim SREB President

The executive committee of the Southern Regional Education Board has named Dale Winkler as interim president.

SREB President Stephen L. Pruitt has announced his departure from SREB to become the next president of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges. Winkler will work closely with Pruitt until Pruitt ends his tenure at SREB in late June.

The executive committee will conduct a search for a new president this summer.

Pruitt to Depart as SREB’s President

Stephen L. Pruitt has announced his departure as president of the Southern Regional Education Board effective June 22.

The Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges today announced that it has selected Pruitt as the next president of SACSCOC.

SREB’s Executive Committee will name an interim president and announce a search for a new president in the coming weeks.

The Southern Regional Education Board’s District Leadership and State Leadership awards recognize the outstanding leadership efforts of two districts and a state that established structures to help transform school and classroom practices and maintain a culture of continuous improvement.

SREB will present the awards to the recipients on July 15 at the Making Schools Work Conference in New Orleans.

Thirteen schools will receive Gene Bottoms Pacesetter School Awards this year in recognition of their efforts to increase quality instruction and raise student achievement.

The Southern Regional Education Board will present the awards to the recipients on July 15 at the Making Schools Work Conference in New Orleans.

The Pacesetter awards recognize schools that implement SREB school improvement goals and frameworks for students to graduate ready for college, careers and credentials.

Affordability Gaps Persist For Lower-income Families

The South has seen mixed progress in college affordability, with some improvements in overall metrics but persistent challenges for lower-income students, according to data in the new Southern Regional Education Board College Affordability Profiles.

Recognizing that affordability is a critical factor in both access to and completion of postsecondary education, SREB publishes the reports to help policymakers evaluate and improve affordability in their states.

SREB begins new Crisis Recovery Support Network training this week in North Carolina

The SREB Crisis Recovery Support Network launched its new counselor training program with its first cohort of trainees in Durham, North Carolina, this week. In collaboration with state and local partners, the Network will provide year-long emotional and mental health support to students, teachers and communities recovering from tragedy.

“You’re here because you’re about to make a difference in the South,” SREB President Stephen L. Pruitt told the gathering on Wednesday.

The Southern Regional Education Board’s Commission on AI in Education has released its first six recommendations, designed to help states move forward with efforts to adopt artificial intelligence in assisting schools and postsecondary institutions.

The 60-plus member commission, which most recently met last Thursday and Friday in Atlanta, was established last February. Members include policymakers and education and business leaders throughout the 16-state SREB region.

Georgia Senate also hears testimony

Legislators in two states heard testimony this week from the Southern Regional Education Board on the mission of a new SREB Crisis Recovery Support Network.

This morning, after hearing testimony from SREB president Stephen L. Pruitt, the Kentucky Senate Committee on Education unanimously passed a resolution to begin training counselors who would provide sustained student, teacher and community support long after a school tragedy. Pruitt also testified on Tuesday before the Georgia Senate about the network.
