Transforming Education for a Fast-Changing World
My first 30 days of listening in SREB states
In my first 30 days as president of SREB, I’ve sat across tables with governors, legislators and education leaders across the South. What emerges in every conversation is striking: a shared urgency around transforming education systems for a world that’s changing faster than ever.
Last week, I had the privilege of
meeting with Mississippi Governor Tate Reeves, SREB Board Chair.
We discussed the state’s remarkable literacy gains. Rather than
talking about miracles, he offered many clear-eyed insights about
strategic vision, alignment between policy and practice, high
expectations for student success, and the courage to maintain
that focus over many years.
Governor Reeves has good company in leaders from South Carolina, Kentucky and Georgia, who are also focused on policies and practices that ensure all learners are prepared for what’s next. Common priorities I am hearing include educator workforce development, AI-ready pathways for student success, early learning and postsecondary attainment.
Twelve more visits to go on my listening tour. I’m already energized by how our member states are leading together, and how SREB will support them.
