Sen. Dave Sokola Honored for 28 Years of Work in Education

CHARLOTTE — Sen. Dave Sokola, who has served more than three decades in the Delaware Senate, was recognized for distinguished service at the annual meeting of the Southern Regional Education Board Annual Meeting on June 6.

He serves as Delaware’s Executive Committee representative and has also served as Legislative Advisory Council vice chair and chair.

“Sen. Sokola’s 28 years of commitment to SREB has left a lasting impact on our organization and the states we serve,” SREB President Valerie Greenhill said. “From his leadership on our Executive Committee to his insights on numerous commissions, his focus has always been on improving educational policy and opportunities for students.”

During his time with SREB, Sokola served as a member of the Commission on AI in Education, the Commission on College Affordability in the South, the Commission on Computer Science and Information Technology, the Commission on the Middle Grades and the Commission on Career and Technical Education.

“Sen. Sokola embodies the true spirit of dedicated public service,” SREB board vice chair Dr. Felicia Cumings Smith said. “He understands that strengthening education requires a long-term state commitment and a focus on building consensus. His work sets a standard for leadership in our region.”

Sokola was first elected to the Delaware Senate in 1990 and was first chosen as President Pro Tempore of the Delaware Senate in 2021. He has worked to improve Delaware’s education system as a long-serving Education Committee chair and continues to serve as a member of that committee.

In Delaware, Sokola has served on numerous state commissions and task forces, including the School District Consolidation Task Force, the Advance Educator Compensation and Careers Committee, the Enrollment Preference Task Force and the Truancy Task Force.
