Powerful Instructional Practices Physical Education

Overview

Physical Education

SREB’s Powerful Physical Education Instructional Practices show teachers how to create safe, inclusive learning environments in which students explore movement and the benefits of physical activity based on their unique needs. Whatever curriculum they follow, teachers can use the practices to design instruction and assignments that help students develop the knowledge and skills needed to achieve and maintain a health-enhancing level of fitness for themselves and for their friends, family and community.

Powerful Physical Education Instructional Practices

Teachers who follow SREB’s Powerful Physical Education Instructional Practices draw on state and national standards to design instruction and assignments that encourage students to explore, reflect on and share the benefits of physical activity for physical and emotional health, enjoyment, challenge, self-expression and social interaction. Whatever their unique needs, students of all ability levels develop motor skills, adopt healthy behaviors, enhance their physical fitness, build self-efficacy and emotional intelligence, and demonstrate respect for others engaging in physical activities. Teachers also support students in extending and applying the fitness-promoting strategies they learn and practice in school with their friends, families, teams and communities.
