T2L: Math & Science

Overview

Fostering Inquiry, Logic and Problem-Solving
Where Math and Science Meet the Science of Teaching

Note for returning visitors: This program was formerly known as SREB SMART (Science and Math Alternative Route to Teaching). While the name has changed to align with our unified Teaching to Lead process, our core focus on driving STEM achievement remains the same.

Great teachers are the key to preparing students for success in college and high-demand careers. T2L: Math & Science is a professional learning pathway designed specifically for secondary math and science teachers who enter education through an alternative route or transition from STEM-related industries.

Post

They Have the Math and Science Knowledge. We Bring the Pedagogy.

While these educators possess exceptionally strong subject-matter content knowledge, they may enter the classroom without a formal degree in education, prior teaching experience or initial confidence in their instructional abilities. This pathway bridges that gap, transforming STEM experts into highly effective classroom leaders.

Tailored for STEM Environments

While rooted in T2L’s four core pedagogical pillars—Planning, Engagement, Assessment and Culture—the Math & Science pathway contextualizes these practices using real-world scientific and quantitative examples:

  • Intellectually Demanding Inquiry: Designing laboratory environments and mathematical problem sets that promote hypothesis testing, logical reasoning and data analysis.
  • Project- and Problem-Based Learning: Creating authentic assignments where math and science serve as practical tools to solve actual community, technical or industrial challenges.
  • Differentiating STEM Instruction: Tailoring complex quantitative concepts to support diverse learning speeds and styles without sacrificing academic rigor.
  • Data-Driven Adjustments: Utilizing formative assessment data to pinpoint exactly where students are losing the thread of a concept and adjusting instructional pacing in real time.

Customizable Design and Delivery

T2L: Math & Science features a flexible scope and sequence, allowing participants to receive as many as 200 hours of blended training, coaching and peer support before, during and after their critical first year of teaching:

  • Pre-Service Summer Intensives: Focused instruction prior to the first school year, utilizing individual and team assignments, teach-backs, and facilitated discussions to build foundational teaching skills.
  • Just-in-Time Professional Development: Regular quarterly sessions designed to prepare STEM teachers for the specific challenges of the upcoming grading period.
  • Professional Learning Communities: Structured opportunities to share unique STEM classroom challenges and collaborative solutions within a community of peers.
  • On-Site Coaching & Mentoring: Targeted on-site coaching visits and support from experienced math and science educators to refine daily instructional practices.
  • Post-Year-One Reflection: Intensive reflection and instructional planning during the summer following the first year of teaching to sustain long-term growth.
