Postsecondary Feedback to High Schools

Statewide policies govern postsecondary feedback reports to high schools. These contain information such as college enrollment rates and the performance of recent graduates. These reports help to influence K-12 education policies and inform schools on whether they are adequately preparing graduates for postsecondary endeavors. (Updated July 2023)

Alabama
Postsecondary Feedback to High Schools

Ala. Code § 16-5-7(7) requires the Commission on Higher Education to provide feedback reports to high schools using data collected through the Statewide Student Unit Record Data System. The reports include enrollment and remediation rates for recent high school graduates. The commission tracks the feeder high schools for each public two- and four-year college. Each high school also receives a report that includes the number of students taking remedial courses.

Delaware
Postsecondary Feedback to High Schools

The Delaware Department of Education releases annual College Success Reports that include data on student enrollment and remediation rates in Delaware public and private colleges. In addition, the state report includes data on student performance on college entrance exams, grade-level enrollment and participation, accompanied by recommendations for future goals and strategies. Data is broken down by race, ethnicity and income.

Florida
Postsecondary Feedback to High Schools

Fla. Stat. Ann. § 1008.37 directs the Department of Education to report on the status of recent high school graduates enrolled in public colleges or career centers. The High School Feedback Report provides data on the number and percentage of graduates enrolled in a postsecondary experience, as well as performance on placement tests and in remedial courses where applicable. For reference, the reports provide achievement data at the state, district and school levels and break down that data by race and ethnicity. 

The reports also include the success rate of students enrolled in various math and English courses in the Fall immediately following graduation from high school. A recent update to the High School Feedback Reports requires that districts report graduate data as reported for the federal high school graduation rate, meaning trends that include data from 2016 and before are no longer valid.

Georgia
Postsecondary Feedback to High Schools

The Governor’s Office of Student Achievement releases High School Graduate Outcome reports to high schools including the percentage of graduates enrolled in a postsecondary experience, the percentage requiring English or math remediation (public colleges only), and the percentage earning a postsecondary degree or certificate within five years.

Kentucky
Postsecondary Feedback to High Schools

The Kentucky Center for Statistics, through the Kentucky Longitudinal Data System, provides state, district and school level High School Feedback Reports. These include postsecondary enrollment rates at in-state institutions, the percentage of graduates meeting the college and/or career-ready benchmarks, average high school and first-year college indicators and the average number of freshman year credits earned.

Louisiana
Postsecondary Feedback to High Schools

The Louisiana Department of Education publishes state, district and school level data on the number and percentage of individual high school’s graduates who attend college, and of those, rates of students applying in-state and to two- and four- year institutions.

Maryland
Postsecondary Feedback to High Schools

MD Code, Education, § 11-703 requires the Maryland Higher Education Commission to share data on the postsecondary performance of high school graduates, including enrollment, remediation, retention and college completion rates.

The Maryland Department of Education, through the Maryland Longitudinal Data System, reports initial postsecondary enrollment data by year, county and subgroup. The department also issues high school completion data and compares these to workforce participation information.

Mississippi
Postsecondary Feedback to High Schools

Mississippi Lifetracks releases annual state-level data. The site highlights statewide trends and reports the following postsecondary data by subgroup:

  • Postsecondary enrollment rates
  • Number and rate of graduates taking remedial courses
  • Graduates attaining 24 credit hours within two years of enrollment
  • Freshman retention rates
  • Graduation rates of public university freshmen who graduated from, or transferred to, a university within four, six and eight years after their first enrollment

North Carolina
Postsecondary Feedback to High Schools

The Board of Governors for the University of North Carolina System maintains the Freshman Admissions and Performance Dashboard. The site displays college admissions, college readiness, retention and graduation data at the system and institutional levels. Data is broken down by race, ethnicity and income.

Oklahoma
Postsecondary Feedback to High Schools

The Oklahoma State Regents for Higher Education produces the High School Indicators report. The document provides feedback to districts, counties, and high schools on the college-going rates and first-year success of recent graduates. Indicators include enrollment rates, first-year GPA and credits earned, mean ACT scores by high school, and the number and percentage of students taking remedial or developmental courses by subject.

South Carolina
Postsecondary Feedback to High Schools

The South Carolina Department of Education compiles the College Freshman Report on the number and percentage of South Carolina high school graduates who attend college. The report indicates the number of college courses that students passed or failed by the subject area. The summary also includes a percentage breakdown by high school of the postsecondary activities of high school graduates, including college enrollment, gainful employment and military enlistment.

The South Carolina Commission on Higher Education compiles an annual report on the admission standards for first-time entering freshmen. The report includes data on applications, acceptances and enrollment and specifies the minimum SAT score required of most applicants for admission.

Tennessee
Postsecondary Feedback to High Schools

The Tennessee Board of Regents maintains the Tennessee High School Pipeline Dashboard and publishes annual reports providing information on recent high school graduates enrolled in college, subdivided by district, school, college and postsecondary system. These reports track college enrollment, first-year college GPA, average ACT scores and median course loads, broken down by race and ethnicity. The Higher Education Commission publishes the annual Tennessee Higher Education Fact Book, which provides detailed information about higher education enrollment and persistence in the state.

Postsecondary Feedback to High Schools

The Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board provides reports on High School Graduates Enrolled in Higher Education the Following Fall. The board’s data dashboard includes data on postsecondary enrollment and first-year student success indicators.

Virginia
Postsecondary Feedback to High Schools

The Virginia Department of Education publishes an annual Postsecondary Achievement Report, a dashboard that displays postsecondary enrollment and first-year outcomes by school and district. The school and district views report data by demographic subgroup. Districts have access to remedial enrollment, credit accumulation and degree and certificate completion, along with graduates’ employment rates, and share this information with students and families annually. School divisions can do so by linking to the SCHEV Research website. All public and private institutions receiving any general fund support (including the Tuition Assistance Grant) link to the website to provide the same information to current and prospective students.

West Virginia
Postsecondary Feedback to High Schools

The West Virginia Higher Education Policy Commission and Council of Community and Technical Colleges produce an annual report on college-going rates of recent high school graduates, by county and school. The statewide West Virginia Higher Education Report Card discusses college developmental education, placement, first-time freshman progress, GPA and retention. The commission also maintains West Virginia’s Higher Education Portal, an interactive portal that provides education data including college success and workforce outcomes.
